LHENA is working hard to increase neighborhood park space, one irregular shaped lot at a time..

Despite our proximity to some of the best green spaces that Minneapolis has to offer, the Wedge and its aptly shaped geographic borders, contain some of the lowest amounts of formal park space per capita in the entire City. This paucity is what inspired the push for an expanded Wedge Point Park.

Neighbors north of Franklin are all too familiar with this not-so informal park situated at the very top of the Wedge between Aldrich and Bryant (alongside its adjoining gravel lot). However, Wedge Point Park is not managed or cared for by the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board (MPRB). LHENA is working to change this, while increasing the footprint of the park. By tapping a park piggy bank known as parkland dedication fees (essentially a pot of money that is fed by mandatory contributions from developers that build in the neighborhood) LHENA, in collaboration with the City, is working to transition the two triangular lots into formal MPRB parks.

The most recent result of this project was the City’s July 8th vacation of the parcel, the first step in transitioning to MPRB management. Once MPRB receives the land, they will begin work on turning the adjacent gravel lot into an accompanying greenspace, nearly doubling the size of the park. Community feedback has been and will continue to be essential to creating the new park, so keep your eyes peeled for a chance to weigh in on the ultimate design of the space.
